Timber - Matai The amazing thing about this culture is the way it has developed from simple beginnings to what it is today. For instance, the moko or tatooing started out as a few simple lines which over time, ta moko [tattooing experts] have added lines to this simple pattern until we have the full facial designs that we have today. The two sides of a persons face represent his Whakapapa [ancestry] or whatever else someone wishes to wear but the amazing thing is, the patterns still appear symetrical even though each side of one's face has variations based on history. Today's ta moko experts have brought about a revival in this ancient art, not only in this country but around the world and along the way I'm sure they have added a part of themselves back into the art form that Maori call Moko. This is an original work of art.
