Timber - Totara The Wheku is defined by it's elongated eyes depicting a squint or a frown which would be created more by splashing water in one's face. The Wheku was commonly used in carvings by some tribal areas and also placed at the apex of a meeting house. The small head on top represents the tiny voice that people often hear warning them of danger and other things ,a sixth sense if you like. This particular piece has hands incorporated as part of it's tongue which signifies that one had to control what one said or quite often a slip of the tongue could lead to war. This Wheku is an original work of art. |
