Timber - Matai Fronting the apex of the Maihi [barge boards], the Koruru of a wharenui [carved house] usually represented a major ancestor of people linked to the living by unbroken lines of descent. This mask represents a stylised owl and the large round eyes would give the impression of someone staring at you. Being the focal point of the house, this symbol is regarded as a living entity representing their mana [prestige]. This is an original work of art. |
