Timber - Totara, a native New Zealand Red Pine. The korupe in earlier times marked the boundary between the world of darkness in side the meeting house and the world of light outside. This lintle has a central figure whom history has said was a seer [Matakite],hence the eyes dug right through. During his travels through this country he found himself and his slave freezing to death on top of moutain so he prayed [karakia] to his ancestors to send fire to warm him up. His ancestors sent heat in the form of subterranean fire which is one of the stories of how geothermal fire arrived in this country. The two manaia figures that flank the central figure are the ancestors and the spiral patterns [Takarangi] are bubbling hot pools. A more detailed explanation will accompany the purchase. This is a original work of art. |
