The rain cape was the most widely used cloak in former times and was worn by both men and women. Flax leaf strips were thatched into a woven garment which followed the shape of the body and allowed for it to fit over the shoulders andstop the cape from falling off the wearer. It not only kept the rain off but the inside weave kept the wearer warm.Shorter capes were also used as a garment worn like a kilt and while times have changed somewhat these raincapes still remain the most functional garments that we have. |
