Putatara is an instrument made with triton shell that has connections with Triton son of Poseidon the Greek god of the sea. Here in this country the maori used when they went and returned from fishing and for numerous rituals and ceremonies. The story has it that Tane went to the uppermost heaven to aquire the three baskets of knowledge and as he arrived at each heaven the sound of two Putatara announced his arrival, which represents two forms of thunder.Attached to the shell are three baskets which represent the three baskets of knowledge. To play this instrument, all one has to do is blow like a normal trumpet. The design around the sides of the box is called Puhoro, which represents the fury that winds of a storm produces, and the pattern on the lid reminds one of the tumultuous nature the elements which surround us every day. This is an origional work of art. |
