The maro was made from the harakeke [flax plant] and was a type of apron-girdle worn by menand women. The maro is woven from left to right,starting at the bottom and gradually increasing the number of strands so as to form a triangle. The loose ends were then woven into thick belt-like top with additional strands added to tie around the wearer's waist.There are many variations and patterns that are used in the weaving of maro. |
