Timber -New Zealand native Matai. Ceremonial paddles were ornately carved. The more ornate the design the more significant the owner of the paddle. This paddles has two carved figures. The first is Taangaroa, God of the sea. The second is a Marakihau, one of his assistants. Marakihau acted as food gatherers for the Tangaroa using a long tube-like tongue to draw prey in . His twisted serpentine appearance symbolises the way fish propel themselves through the water. The heads on the handle of the hoe represent the owner's own personal guardians who were usually ancestors. This is an original work of art.
