Timber - New Zealand native Maire. This thrusting weapon has a single lobe which was used to extract the liver. On the opposite side is a carved figure below the hook shape(waha)and a carved head on the reke (heel)of the weapon. The two interlocked figures on the blade represent negotiation which nearly always took place before any battle in the hope that tribal differences could be settled and thus avoid unneseccary bloodshed. The patterns used are called pakati and haehae. This is an original work of art. |
