Putatara is an instrument made with triton shell that has connections with Triton son of Poseidon the Greek god of the sea. It was used when they went and returned from fishing and for numerous rituals and ceremonies. The story has it that Tane went to the uppermost heaven to aquire the three baskets of knowledge and as he arrived at each heaven the sound of two Putatara announced his arrival, which represents two forms of thunder. To play this instrument, all one has to do is blow like a normal trumpet. This is an original work of art. |
