Tribe - Ngati Kahungunu

Born in Wairoa Todd is of Ngati Kahungunu descent, a tribe situated along the lower East Coast of the North Island, New Zealand.

He began the Diploma of Art, Craft and Design at Waiariki Polytechnic in Rotorua, learning a range of skills and techniques from various arts, art forms and history, appreciating cultures. In his final year, Todd majored in wood carving / sculpture and graduated with honors.

The successful exhibition with Roi Toia in 1996 "Reflections" became the birth of a business venture Mauri Concepts. This two man operation embraces the fortitude and wisdom of traditional Maori carving, to exploring the vibrant atmosphere and participating in the cutting edge forum of contempory Maori art.

"Acknowledging my culture by incorporating traditional styles and motifs along with contemporary concepts and influences, I see my work as a translation of thought, expressing my inner self through fine sculpture."

Todd now favours contempory work.
