Thomas graduated from Waiariki Polytechnic. He needed a traditional base before learning the contempory arts and craft and studied at th NZ Maori Arts and Crafts Institute achieving a Diploma from the NZ Maori Arts and Crafts Institute as a Traditional Woodcarver.
